Era: The Consortium - Core Rulebook

Watermarked PDF

Humanity has left Earth over a thousand years behind, landing on a new planet and founding a new government. The Consortium is an inspiring ideal - three star systems teaming with life and four species living and working together. As time passes, however, cracks are showing in the Humanity-led society and those less scrupulous have taken power.

Enter at any point in 500 years of playable story, following the Consortium's growth from a small colony to a multi-system economic and political establishment. Explore new worls and encounter alien races, direct or fight in battles which span a solar system and will decide the future of the Consortium or join a Resistance movement against the government to save or destroy billions of lives!

What you decide will define the fate of the Consortium...

If you'd like to know more about the setting, please check out our website's Backstory Page.

There are 8 released expansions for this book, giving the rules and background for psionics, a fifth alien race, the chance to play as secret agents, survival horror rules and much more! You can grab them right here!

The Era d10 ruleset is designed to allow you to experience this universe in a way that is as unobtrusive as possible without being misrepresentative. By choosing your skills carefully, your character can dominate in any of 5 forms of combat, talk their way out of any situation or protect their teammates from harm.

The rules could be described as "A Success-counting dice pool system where you roll Attribute + Skill in d10s and the difficulty of the task determines which numbers count as Successes."

In case that was a bit too brief or jargony, here's a bit more detail:

The system is based around multiple dice - the more skilled you are, the more dice you have - and a variable goal based on activity difficulty.

Using an Attribute and Skill system, which each define their own areas of influence, you roll your dice depending on what you're attempting - whether Dexterity + Engineering for a precision piece of work, Intelligence + Engineering for a more theoretical problem or Luck + Engineering for a complete long shot, you'll be able to adapt to your circumstances and focus on your strengths.

Although you roll more dice the more skilled you are, the number you are attempting to reach varies depending on the difficulty of the action - if shooting someone in clear conditions, the GM would ask for a 7. If someone was laying a mine, more likely a 6. Firing over your shoulder at someone 30 metres away, while crouching behind a low wall would definitely be a 10!

If you would like to try the rules, please see our Quickstart Pack!

any news on when Era: Hitman will be available? The Quickstart looks pretty good to me.

Hi Patrick!

Era: Hitman was available as a digital only product on Kickstarter a short while ago.

A further Kickstarter is planned to provide a physical option. After that, we will be adding it to this site!

Does that answer the question?

This is so F'in stupid, no free playtest pack, the link here is no good, your site wants $12.00 to see if I want to plunk down another $60 for the hardback, my God you should be giving free full pdf's away with every hardcopy bought and another $12.00 off if I decide to buy a physical book, its like FFG and Star Wars all over again raping me. Forget it, I will go get a copy of N.E.W. at least I can get the pdf with the book as well or the full pdf for $10.00!

Hi Scott, thanks for your feedback.

I had made the Quickstart Guide private on DriveThruRPG after the Kickstarter, because I very seldom get any interest here. I've actually re-opened that - it can be found here:

However, I believe you missed the Quickstart Guide on the website, which can be found here:

Secondly, I apologise if you feel our pricing is unreasonable. The Era: The Consortium Rulebook is a large book with a lot of content, which can't have a PDF sold at $10.

Interestingly, I also very seldom get requests for the Hardback and the PDF to be delivered together - most people want either one or the other. In reality, I'd be more than happy to provide the PDF along with the Hardback if that were requested. I'll consider adding that to the Product - thank you for your suggestion.

I hope you...See more

I did not find the binding and printing quality of this site to be satisfactory, so it is not available here.

However, you can obtain it:
- from several Brick and Mortar stores in England (I note you are in London, so Orc's Nest would be an option)
- from us at a convention
- from one of the Kickstarters that we run pretty frequently

I hope that helps.

Is the only place to buy a dead-tree version at the shades of vengeance website?

There are a number of reviews available here right now, including the one Ronald mentioned earlier:

Got a review copy for a review on, which should be publisher soon. Loved the game! 500 year history is done really well, with lots of campaign ideas for different periods in the Consortium's history. Rules system is a little similar to World of Darkness, although the skill selection isn't always as intuitive. Great layout, excellent artwork throughout and lots of potential. Editor told me there's more material coming soon, including optional rules like hit locations and Maneuvers, so game seems to be well-supported. Recommended.

I've added some explanation of the rules and also the Playtest Pack that we offered on Kickstarter in an attempt to address that.

Forgive us for the lack of information on the rules - it's often hard to know what people are looking for when you come to a new platform!

Definitely have to agree with Jimmy P on this. I will not buy any corebook, no matter how gorgeous it may be, without a modicum of information regarding the setting AND the rules/system used. It´s just a matter of principle, and I would go as far as to say it´s a matter of respect for the potential client.

The idea of having a paid "primer", especially at $10.00 tag, in an era where most new systems present a free quick-start ruleset, at least those who wish to get any kind of decent results, seems a bit ludicrous, but that is just my opinion...

As a personal rule, I do not buy a game if I do not know anything about its mechanics. I know many people will agree. Your company offers a ''primer'' for the rules system, but at a 10$ price tag, it is a shot in the dark - an expensive shot in the dark.

Having said that, the art seems gorgeous and the setting seems interesting. It is the type of game I am looking for, but spending 25$ on something I might not use seems way too risky.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
