Keep walking.

Eyes straight ahead.

Don’t look back.

In the shadows and between the cracks of our everyday lives hide the Chronicles of Darkness. Here lurk creatures of ancient myth and urban legend. Here lie the graves of angels and the bunkers of secret government programs. Here every malformed horror you’ve ever seen out of the corner of your eye has a home. And they’ve seen you.

Don’t look back!

Chronicles of Darkness RPG rulebook contains:

  • A guide to creating characters to explore a world of modern horror, from hopes and fears to psychic powers.
  • Dramatic rules for investigation, social manipulation, and bone-crunching violence.
  • Over a dozen monsters straight out of weird fiction and urban legend… plus complete rules for creating your own.
  • The God-Machine Chronicle, a massive collection of sample characters and techgnostic adventures.
  • Formerly titled nWoD Core Rulebook 2nd Edition.

Note on the Print Editions: Standard Color uses a thinner paper stock than Premium Color, basically the same paper as the Black & White books. This usually means the colors are less vivid, but it also means the price drops a bit per page in the production process. Examples of pages: Premium Color vs. Standard Color.

Are there any changes between this and the New World of Darkness core book? Could I still play Midnight Roads with this one?

Would like to see a paperback option like the first edition WoD has...

I want to purchase the print edition, but several of the reviews mention some significant errors (many of the cut-and-paste nature). Has the book been updated since the print availability to fix these errors? If not, does anyone now when we can expect an errata corrected update?

Don't count on it. I don't understand exactly why, but when I asked the same kind of question the answer I got was something along the lines that the files would have to be completely striped down and rebuilt from scratch to fix even the most rudimentary typo. And there were a lot of, penned miscarriages so to speak, in the NWoD. Now, I don't know if this is the truth or not since the magnificently superhuman ego's at White Wolf/CCP/Onyx Path would never allow an actual answer. I am thinking it would likely make them think (at the very least) they would look bad so instead we just get to deal with it and damn you if you don't praise them for their greatness either way, no matter how misplaced it may be. I never kept track of whom the editor(s) were, but whoever it was, at the very least, the Vampire line was the worst. I don't know how this person could call themselves a professional editor with a straight face or with any integrity what-so-ever and have even the slightest shred of a soul. I am confident...See more

The book has been updated since the pdf was first released to correct all the problems caught by readers. Were the reviews you read based on the pdf or the POD?

It wasn't clear whether the reviews I read were PoD or PDF (the reviewer never specified). I would know for sure, except OneBookShelf's PoD service has yet to send me the copy of Chronicles Of Darkness I ordered on February 26. It seems that print on DEMAND is a misnomer, and their quality assurance leaves a lot to be desired. I love this game line. I own a print copy of almost every single nWoD edition book. I hoped to be able to continue collecting print versions of the new edition books, but this experience has really disheartened me. I hope either OneBookShelf gets their act together, or that Onyx Path Publishing offers another option for buying printed media.

Does anyone know if me and my buddies can keep playing Geist with this new book?

Oh absolutely. It will take a little bit of redoing: use the new Virtue/Vice, Experience, and other mortal template rules that this book outlines. Update Synergy to the Integrity format (brew up a few Conditions and possible triggers/penalties), go through the Keys/Manifestations and touch them up (making Conditions to keep some things simple), and voila.

I'm doing all of that for a Geist game now, including making some broader-stroke changes. Shouldn't take more than 30 minutes.

So I understand this is NWoD 2.0 and combines the original core book with the God Machine Chronicles and it's rule updates, but taking into account this is a combination of those two books, is there ANYTHING "missing" from this combo-book? Is there any missing art? is their new art not found in either of the source books? Is any of the art replaced? Does it combine any elements from any other books besides the NWoD and God Machine source books? Stuff like that.

It has the 'Second Edition' full rules in it, so that's all of the Attributes, Skills, Merits (and more Merits than even are in World of Darkness: the God-Machine Chronicle) along with the full character creation rules, Storyteller notes, monsters and all that vital content we found in the 'old' (i.e. first edition) 'new' World of Darkness book from ten years ago but UPDATED and STREAMLINED for Second Edition... which we now shall call Chronicles of Darkness or CofD from now on rather than World of Darkness. Makes sense, right? :

As best as I can tell, all of the fiction and art - sometimes in different places or contexts - from the God-Machine book ARE in here, with a LOT more!

Hi, this CoD is a new WoD or the old one? Is for the new edition of Vampire: the Masquerade or is a support for Requiem?

This is the second edition of the nWoD.
So Requiem, The Forsaken, etc.

Can I use this rulebook with Demon The Descent?
So, instead of read the 1st World of Darkness rulebook and then the chapter from Demon The Descent that update the rules, skip it and go with Chronicles of Darkness?

This book is exactly what I've been waiting for. For those afraid that it has too much fluff from the GMC, don't worry. The new write-up, clean look, neat organization, plus added fluff make up for it. Besides, I think of it this way. If Onyx Path came up and asked me if I wanted a new book on the street for only $20, of course I'd gladly support the team. Looking forward to getting a hard copy of this to mark a new beginning to storytelling for me, without all the hang ups I once felt over "New World of Darkness."

I believe I already have this (the old title), from a Kickstarter ... is there an upgrade discount for those who had the (new) "World_of_Darkness_Rulebook.pdf"?

It sounds like much of this is drawn from the GMC book. Will those who purchased the GMC book get a discount or anything related to this title?

Is there an example for applying armor to firearms damage in this book? I feel like I understand how general and ballistic armor work in the new system, but it'd be nice to have confirmation in the text.

So I have The World of Darkness and God-Machine Chronicle, is this a new edition on both of these? Or just both of those mashed together?
Customer avatar
R. B December 12, 2015 12:56 pm UTC
This is a new edition of The World of Darkness. It integrates the rules changes from The God-Machine Chronicle with the rest of the system so that it's now a standalone core book. The adventures and such from the GMC remain the same as in that book.

Right, this just compiles the rules changes & GMC campaign hooks into a single book.

Please note: This is NOT a review of the book, nor to I have any stake in this beyond that of a humble purchaser! That said, to answer the question of do you need to buy this book, I'd say that while 'need' is very strong word, you absolutely CAN get by with those two books. However, this one is something different.

This one has it all in one place, with the World of Darkness rules 'revised' to fit with the other Second Edition releases. It offers a lot in terms of tone and worldbuilding that we didn't get in the first rulebook. It's also built as a stand-alone resource for mortal -- if somewhat exceptional -- characters who don't fit in a specific 'splat' (i.e. the other books).

Actually, it also features some new rules as well. Things like the investigation, pursuit, and equipment creation rules are all new. They're not featured in God-Machine Chronicle or the World of Darkness Rulebook.

They're not a huge chunk of the book, but that's worth noting.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
