CREATE A MEDIEVAL FANTASY CHARACTER!

Create knights, burglars, mages, musketeers, and berserkers in this sourcebook for the What's O.L.D. is N.E.W. roleplaying game system.

With over 40 careers, 7 races, and a wide selection of skills, traits, and exploits, this book walks you through the character creation process. Select your character's early careers using the life-path system to create inspiring Grand Elf musketeers, shy Mountain Dwarf assassins, brilliant Human firemages, naive Smallfolk clerics, or brawny Orc barbarians.

Will your character be a master of lore, a warrior with shield and sword, or a sneaky burglar? A notorious assassin, a wily con artist, or an inquisitor seeking justice? Only you can decide!

What WOIN Books Do I Need?

What's OLD is NEW is designed in a modular way to let you build the rules system you want. There are three character creation books (Fantasy Careers, Modern Careers, Future Careers), three equipment books (Fantasy Equipment, Modern Equipment, Future Equipment) and three core books (Fantasy Core, Modern Core, Future Core), along with an assortment of additional books like Space, Elements of Magic, Redline, Building A Universe, and so on.

You need at minimum one character creation book, one equipment book, and one core book. They can all be from the same genre, or you can mix and match to put wizards in space or aliens on contemporary Earth.

Check out the full WOIN line here at DTRPG or here at RPGNow. The WOIN core rules are designated open gaming content.  See the official website for more information.

Does this book cover magic, or is a different book needed for that?

It contains a handful of magical careers (mage, cleric, druid, firemage, necromancer, inquisitor), who all have magical exploits, but the freeform verb-noun spell creation system is thoroughly detailed in [WOIN] Elements of Magic, due out very soon.

I'm confused. Much of this information is on the publisher's website for free. What did I pay for when I bought this?

Like Pathfinder, D&D 3.5, Fate, and many other games, WOIN is a open system. The WOIN Rules Reference Document on the website includes all the Open Gaming Content, in the same way that the d20 SRD has the D&D 3.x rules or Paizo's PRD has the Pathfinder rules. There's more information on the Open Gaming License here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_Game_License

The content on the WRRD is a stripped down version of the rules for use by third party publishers and fans interested in creating their own content.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
