Symbaroum - Core Rulebook

“Twilight falls, Davokar darkens.” The goblin Fenya sounded calm, despite the flock of violings that swarmed eagerly around them – the nasty birds could predict bloodshed, they all knew that. Kvarek felt the sweat on his palms threaten his grip on the spear and shouted over his shoulder: “Magdala, faster!” The witch didn’t answer, lost as she was to the sinister harmonies of the ritual, her hands caressing the pillar’s grim stone face.

A loud rumbling echoed through the ruin, as if some giant creature had awoken and stood up from under layer upon layer of stone and soil. “The witch said that the abominations come out at night,” the goblin muttered. Kvarek’s knuckles whitened as he tightened the grip: “No, only that they are hungriest after dark. They are not afraid of the evening sun, and not of …” He was cut short by Magdala’s hoarse voice: “The pillar has answered. I know where to find the mausoleum.”

Then, out of the ruins, the Blight Beast came at them, massive and roaring. Its claws scraped the rocky ground, scouring out deep sores oozing pure corruption, leaving drops of black, mercury-like mildew on moss and stones in its wake.

“We cannot escape this,” said Fenya. Magdala nodded agreement. “Well then,” Kvarek sighed, “this is where we make our stand, for the right to the treasures of Symbaroum!”

Symbaroum invites you to join in the adventure! Explore the vast Forest of Davokar in the hunt for treasures, lost wisdoms and fame. Visit the eleven barbarian clans to trade or to plunder their treasuries. Establish a base of power among princes, guilds or rebellious refugees in the capital city of Yndaros. Or survive encounters with famished Arch Trolls, dark-minded Blight Beasts and undead warlords. But whatever you do, never ignore the warnings spoken by the wardens of the forest: tread carefully and do not disturb the ruins of old, for the dark deep of Davokar is about to awaken.

- A fast-paced and flexible rule-set for creating player characters and acting in the game world

- 5 playable races and 3 archetypes, divided into 15 occupations, as a basis for character creation

- 35 abilities, 25 mystical powers, 33 rituals and a large number of weapons and armors to make each character unique

- Detailed guidelines for how to create adventures; 38 monsters and adversaries, and 19 monstrous traits to arm the characters’ enemies with

- More than 50 pages describing the game world’s history, geography and cultures, focusing on four particular settings: the Forest of Davokar, the fortune hunter’s town of Thistle Hold, the Ambrian capital Yndaros and the cliff of Karvosti where the barbarian clans convene.

- Symbaroum is a complete roleplaying game; all you need to play is paper, pen and a dice set.

- The roleplaying game Symbaroum is suitable for all adventurous humans, goblins and trolls from the age of 12.

Great as the art is, the digital release is terrible in formatting. Almost every art page is cut off and skewed, making it impossible to print out or save digitally.

Ok, I checked few versionsof this corebook. And I wonder, why there is still error on 17th page? 'Twenty-one years have passed since the Dark Lords were vanquished and the Queen realized that her realm was dying' when later it is said that it was only few months 'No more than a couple of months after the
decisive battle against the Dark Lords, Korinthia’s troops reached the region in the north'. Sooo....The Queen lived in dying country for 21 years AFTER the war or only couple of months? I get it that so errors cannot be cleared because many people do net see them, but guys! 15 minutes in FIRST reading, about the most important thing in setting and this kind of error?

nope, the dark lords were defeated 21 years ago, then the Queen and some portion of Alberetor servants enter the land that will be called Ambria, and prepare the land to be colonized.

The latest version of the PDF appears to have more image artifacting than prior versions. I realize this was probably a conceit to file-size, but is there any way you could provide access to the higher-detail version as well, for those of us who prefer quality to size?

(For any potential purchasers reading this, don't let it dissuade you - it's only noticeable by comparison, and at higher zoom at that. I'm just a stickler for detail who wants to experience this gorgeous book in all of its glory.)

Have you gotten it to work, Nicholas? If not, please turn to DriveThruRPG for support; there shouldn't be anything wrong with the file.

Wonderful piece of work. I've read over the rules in a skimmy sort of way, and I'm not convinced about them, but the book itself is amazing. I've got everything they've published, I think, and I went through Jarnringen's distributor in the UK, Modiphius, to get the offset print edition of this. I'd imagine that the other varieties of print are quality, but this one, wow. Va va voom, so nice.

Again, though. The rules, and the world? Not so hooked. Very simple rules; too simple for me, probably. Players roll is a neat idea and one I'd like to try, though. I suspect that the character archetypes are just there because people expect something like them to exist. They serve little function in the system because they both (a) impose no restrictions and (b) give no real aid in building a character. They're all just short buckets of suggested traits; each archetype is a full page, and 99% of the space is a full-page painting of the exemplar (beautiful, of course) There's also no mechanism for social combat,...See more

Thanks for your kind words. The digital edition of the Advanced Player's Guide (new name) will likely launch by the end of January, as soon as the backers of our latest KS campaign have received their print copies. Keep an eye here or on our virtual waterholes (Facebook, Google+ or Reddit).

Hey guys, loving your game so far. Really put the spice back into roleplaying for my group. We're all very interested in the release date for the Player's Handbook (you've got a couple of guaranteed sales right here), and I was wondering if you knew when? Also, I'm playing an ogre with a quarterstaff who may very well become interested in the Stavemages, so I'm super keen to find out more.

Well done on such a refreshing game guys, you're awesome!

I'm currently backing their current project "Thistle Hold - Wrath of the Warden" and simply wish I got into this game sooner. I have been looking for that "perfect" game that probably doesn't exist but boy Symbaroum comes close. Its d20 based, players make all the rolls. Roll lower than the relevant attribute, modified by the "difficulty" (-5 to +5), be it armour, "vigilant", etc. When hit, PCs roll armour to reduce damage, and NPCs have fixed armour and damage values. PCs choose from a range of abilities (talents/skills) that can be acquired and improved. Each ability has three levels, novice, adapt, and master with each level improving the abilities game effect. No classes per say so lots of options right off the bat, but they do provide three archetypes (and further expand each of those) that provide recommended attributes and abilities so you can build a PC very quickly or do you own unique thing. The best bit (aside from art and background story - recommend if you...See more

Garth, you'll want the hardcover edition with the drool guard, because it will get paged through a bit. The book is gorgeous. The art is top notch and the flavor text for the setting alone is worth the price.

I'm glad I held out, looks like I'm going to back their new kickstarter instead and get the core rules through that.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
