The second edition of CthulhuTech is ready for your feedback! Merge magic with technology and Lovecraftian horrors in the near future in this award-winning RPG.

We're doing an Open Beta for the first of the new Core Books – The Shadow War, focusing on the conflict between the Eldritch Society and the Children of Chaos. Players take on the role of those who have joined in symbiosis with something from Outside in order to fight against a corrupt cult that is rotting out the government from within.

This edition is very different from the original. We've listened to our fans throughout the years.

  • More focused material
  • More accessible
  • Revised and streamlined rules, backed up by careful mathematical analysis
  • Greatly expanded Character options
  • Customizable Tagers
  • None of that stuff that made people cringe from the first edition

All in all, this edition is intended to be a more fully realized vision, that is more user friendly.

Instructions for giving up feedback are included. Files will be updated as development continues.

So join in the fun! What have you got to lose?

It's been a while since I checked in on this. Is CthuluTech V2 still happening because it's been about 2 years now since I knew about it in the first place and with these updates showing but not having a date next to them, I can't even see how long ago the most recent update is.

I guess there was some Q&A panel at GenCon, but nothing on the reddit page about what was talked about.

So really no news at all about what's going on with this game.

I love the setting of Cthulhutech.

I directed Cthulhutech V1.0. during 2 years and after having directed diferent types of adventures (N.E.G. military, Scape from Migou, Find the cult, Scape from that full of sharped teeth thing...) what I saw is that it was (and is) a sandbox to play diferent types of stories with different types of tones.

Me and my O.I.S. players liked the most those centered on investigation, occultism, cults and "humans can be really real monsters"... like "Ghost in the shell goes Cthulhu", and the less those centered on Tagers VS Dohanoids, that is what the new V.2.0 version is about.

I hope when V.2.0 is finished, there will be in the future supplements to cover the other tones Cthulhutech has (it is very very rich in tones), specially O.I.S. centered ones. It has a lot of potencial and the setting for this kind of stories is splendid. Dark Passions book was (in my humble opinion) the pinacle of this mature tone showing the darkest...See more

Would it be possible to get a list on each Tager type of what exactly they get for free at the beginning of their writeups? It can get a little vague at times, and it's easy to get lost in all the tables.

The readme notes that all Tagers get Nightvision for free, but only the Nightmare actually has this in its details.

The Whisper feels a bit limited. I mean, it always has, but having it's plethora of enhanced senses charged for separately is... I mean, we're trading most of its combat ability for those senses and the flight. It'd be nice not to have to pay so many points to get access to them all. Maybe give them a few free ones, similar to how weapon systems are done?

It'd also be nice to get an option for a ranged weapon that deals damage on the Whisper, particularly now that external weapons for Tagers are no longer an option. I mean, mechanically, that's what the Whisper's stats say it ought to be good at, though I can understand if it might be due to concerns of the...See more

Haven't read the whole thing (will probably do a test game and then post a full list of suggestions and edits). However, I've noticed that the rules concerning untrained skills are missing, save from the Drama Points section. Secondly, I must bring up an issue with the basic mechanic. The skill roll appears to be (Skill) dice (poker style) + (Attribute) static value. If this is the case, a difficulty system revolving around the removal of dice will most likely not work very well. If a competent professional (3d10) comes up against a "challenging" situation, he or she is no longer eligible for the "consecutive values" dice bonus. If they come up against a "hard" task, they can no longer obtain doubles, as they only have one die. It is still possible to pass, but what if they suffer a -3 dice penalty? You require the expenditure of Drama points to even attempt the test. Auto-failure is a very discouraging mechanic in my opinion (even the original CoC allows a 1% chance of success in...See more

I have the first edition book, but never played as the crunchiness was never suited to my gaming style. I do however recall that you could play a myriad of different things, from 'jager' pilots, to tagers, to average joe soldiers. Is that still the case in this new edition?

Shadow War focusses on Tagers. Mecha pilots including Engels will be covered by a second rulebook called Aeon War. Mortals can be played with Shadow War though (and Aeon War I would expect).

May I ask what happened to the other tager forms that were added to the game via the vade mecum expansions and the like? Will they possibly be making a return or have they been cut? And also when the beta is over will we be able to buy this as an actual book or just as a pdf?

I played for three months the first version. I have read carefully the change in skills. Some are too generic and others too specific. In my opinion the skill list is too long. Many skills can be grouped in one and treated as skills specializations. But i like so much the new character creation if a player don't know who can his character was in the past read the human background help a lot to make a good history.

I'm sorry for my English isn't be good.

I was interested in CthulhuTech for 1st Edition, never got to get any play out if it but ever since someone compared it to Pacific Rim and directed me to the books I felt a strong desire to play it, especially when I than got to the Tagers and giggled like a madman at the idea of playing something Guyver like. I'm somewhat glad I didn't get to get into it now that they're making a second edition that will streamline things to make it easier for me to learn as well as customization of your Tager.

Now I just have to wait for it to come out.

CthulhuTech is a rather frustrating RPG to have an interest in. From the official website: "CthulhuTech is different from most other storytelling games - it tells a story that has a beginning, middle, and end. Once the setting is established in the Core Book and Companion, six books will bring characters into the epic storyline of CthulhuTech."

So far, great. I love the concept. The problem is that the story books seem to have stalled out. Two of the six are out, but it's been four years since the second was released. And now they are moving to a new edition, which makes it seem more and more unlikely that the original plans will ever actually see completion. At best, it seems to play through the full campaign, you'll have to change editions.

Is CthulhuTech 1st edition the greatest ruleset? No, but I kind of thing that the average CthulhuTech fan is more into the setting than the system.

Hum, there are 8 books that were made for Cthulhu Wars. I guess its true that there is no ending per se. But there is a lot of stuff.

The story books have stalled out, as we update the core setting and rules. The rules are much cooler and cleaner, and the setting has matured. After all, the first edition of CthulhuTech was written in 2004-2004, and published in 2007. We've learned a lot and gotten a lot of feedback from players, so we want to bring the game into a new era before we finish out the story.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
