Rise up against the Masters of Umdaar!

Behold the fallen world of Umdaar, home to savage warriors, cyborg insects, and merciless warlords. Oh, and lasers—lots and lots of lasers. The Masters rule with an iron fist, and the people’s only hope are the archaeonauts and their quest for long-lost artifacts of power. But will the Masters get there first? Masters of Umdaar, our latest Fate World of Adventure by Dave Joria, is a retro tribute to such shiny serials as John Carter of Mars, Flash Gordon, He-Man, and Thundercats.
Masters of Umdaar requires Fate Accelerated Edition to play. This 51-page supplement includes:
  • A randomized Fate dice system to create a wide variety of sci-fi/fantasy characters like robots, mutants, talking animals, and more
  • Character class breakdowns based on Fate Accelerated approaches, with a wide variety of options
  • New rules for cliffhangers—a new form of obstacle to overcome—with rules that encourage the use of different approaches
  • A variety of tools to easily populate your adventures, including a beast generator, trap guidelines, and sample artifacts
  • A sample adventure—The Starblades of Su’ul—as well as seeds for further adventures

The Fate Adventures & Worlds line provides compact, rich, affordable, gorgeous settings with a ready-to-go adventure for GMs in a pinch. Buy one this afternoon, be ready to run this evening.

I got this setting from backing the Fate More kickstarter and just ran the included adventure with a small group of friends. I've never run a tabletop RPG before, though I have been a player for a while. We all had a blast.

This is easily one of the most fun settings I've seen for Fate so far, and the included example adventure is phenomenal. It's very easy to run, and the tv-show-like pacing really fits with the system. I'm particularly fond of the cliffhanger system, which both I and my players agreed is a fantastic way to do traps in a way that's interesting, fun, and challenging. The random character generation is also great, and resulted in a quirky and eclectic party that would find themselves at home in any 80s cartoon.

In short, 10/10, would play again.

Is that ok that the German version of "Masters of Umdaar" from "Uhrwerk Publishing" isn't a pay-what-you-want pdf? It's 7 euro-bucks (about $7,70).

Unless my memory is betraying me here, they licensed the work to translate it. I imagine they should feel free to recover their costs of doing that work however they see fit.

Is there any chance we'll see further supplements, perhaps a more in depth setting guide for this World? It's fantastic and needs more. And yes, I know we can/should add to it ourselves but I do prefer a truly fleshed out canon world.

No official supplement scheduled at this time, but with enough support, who knows? In the meantime, I've posted some of the bonus material (primarily more Random Tables for locations and adventures), on my personal blog at TA Tabletop. The first article starts at http://tatabletop.com/2015/08/29/masters-of-umdaar-bonus-content/. Hope you enjoy!

Whats the difference between a mutoid and a beatman...there aren't descriptions for all the different race types so it's confusing?

That's super intentional. They are what you define them to be.

We're currently running a preorder for the hardcover compilation, Fate Worlds Rise Up, that will contain Masters of Umdaar. Those single-world softcovers haven't performed well enough, so we're trying this for getting the worlds into print. This collection was funded by the Fate More Kickstarter that recently concluded. https://fate-more-from-bits-to-books.backerkit.com/hosted_preorders

Pay what you want? Excellent.

But then the FATE...

Why would you bother...

Yeah, huh? Fate is one of the best game mechanics in the world.

Even if Fate's not to your liking (true for plenty of people), we make sure to stuff every World of Adventure with ideas that can be stolen for the system of your choice. So... that's why you'd bother. :)

can this be run with FAE? I would assume yes but how easy is it to "step down"

Yeah, that's actually a turn down for me. It seems most Fate settings that seem fun to me are for FAE, not Core, which I would prefer better (at least the ones that came out recently). Ah well, I'll just try to make the best out of it.

I prefer Core as well. Converting from FAE will take little to no time, give it a whirl.

If I could convince my players to do FATE I would, but as it is I mine the world settings and ideas from the system into my games anyway. They love the *parts* of FATE I've snuck into our GURPS games so far, and I'm going to eventually get them to play using rules before they even know I did it.

"Yeah, that's actually a turn down for me" Yep, for me too, I like the settings being released including this one, but really am interested in Core, not in FAE, not at all. I still grabbed it, but am much more willing to invest more in Fate material that doesn't use the Accelerated variant.

What is aggravating is that the title reads "A World Adventure for FATE Core", but apparently it requires FAE? Why not make the title "A World Adventure for Fate Accelerated? I only have the Fate Core print books. I guess I'll go without, as I dont want to download and learn a different version of the rules.

Well, that's an interesting perspective. As a publisher of Fate, what's a little aggravating to me is people claiming that something that uses Fate Accelerated's default Approach list is somehow not based on Fate Core, when Fate Accelerated is itself a Fate Core product that just happens not to use Fate Core's default skill list & build. (Seriously, that's the primary difference.) Anything "based on Fate Accelerated" is, transitively, based on Fate Core, so the statement that it's a world of adventure for Fate Core stands.

Fate Accelerated is itself only $5 in print and completely free (and a breeze to read) online.

Also please note, it's Fate, not FATE. :)

If FAE is the same as Fate Core, then how come there is a Evil Hat conversion from one to the other supplement? Answer, FAE and Fate Core are two different beasts. One uses Approaches, which are FAR too simplified to be interesting. The other uses a skill set, which is a far more interesting mechanic.

Stating FAE is the same as Core, is like saying 4th Edition DnD is the same as 5th Edition, or 3rd. They are all DnD, but there are huge differences in them, that some people refuse to play certain editions.

Heck, I like adding in extra skills that may include core abilities that a Race / Class / Profession has. OK, you are an Elf, but how good are you in elf-like things? If you are mediocre+0, you are not much in tune as an elf. Are you Great+4? You can identify someone that a human can only see as a speck on the horizon, walk on snow, and leave no trace in the wilderness. Stunts can be used to use the Elf skill for Ranged attack->bows, and etc.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
