The Clockwork: Dominion Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook

Clockwork: Dominion is a steampunk roleplaying game set in a Victorian world of gothic horror. Players take the role of exceptional individuals within the British Empire of 1896 as it strives to maintain tradition in the face of scientific advancement, powerful mystical practices, and the threat of the Pontus - the primordial chaos which is slowly devouring creation. Reality itself is crumbling while debutantes vie for social currency, bureaucrats backstab one another, pirates plunder the seas and skies, and a few honorable men and women fight back against the chaos that is consuming the world.

Clockwork: Dominion features:

  • a fluid and easy-to-learn core mechanic that rewards player creativity.
  • an innovative initiative system that eliminates round robin gameplay and allows characters to act and react without “waiting for their turn."
  • a robust social conflict system that allows the complex world of Victorian social politics to be a focus of your story. Social conflict commingles with physical conflict, and players have options like never before!
  • player options for customized item creation and multiple systems for transcendent supernatural powers including Alchemy, Charisms, Glamour, and Ritual Magic.
  • Narrator systems for story writing and antagonist creation.

This Core Rulebook contains all the rules you need for creating characters and playing Clockwork: Dominion.

**The physical copy available through this website is the print-on-demand version of this book. It is identical in content to the retail version of the book, but printed on 70lb uncoated paper.**

Clockwork Cards

A single proprietary 100-card deck of Clockwork Cards is required for to play. Several versions of these cards are available, differing in size, cost, and artwork. Among them: Print-and-Play Cards can be downloaded for free or acquired in our free Quickstart Rules. Full-color Clockwork print-on-demand Cards can be purchased separately.

Staff Pick

OBS_mere.pngClockwork: Dominion is a beautiful steampunk-horro game that gives players the opportunity to shine via their own creativity. There is a card set for the game featuring gorgeous artwork, and which keeps players on the edge of their seats using an exciting twist-of-fate-style mechanic.
This game is very simple to learn. For me, the best part is the social conflict mechanic, but there is also a masterful flowing initiative system that brings players into the action smoothly and intuitively.

I highly recommend this game for people who are looking for a steampunk RPG that is quick to pick up, but which also offers a robust storyline with limitless opportunities.

I just want to say, in case the authors and publishers are reading this, that I disagree with the ethics of using a watermarked PDF and have chosen to not follow through with the purchase of your game after seeing it mentioned in a Reddit conversation.

The comments section really isn't a place for discussions on personal safety and the realities of gaming online, or of how to gain exposure for your products, so I'm not going to even attempt it. This post is merely to inform you of what some of your could-be customers are thinking but didn't take the time to say. This is how you get free feedback, because if I simply chose not to purchase your product, you wouldn't know it even happened. So consider this some free market research. The bottom line is that you're only putting your best salesmen at risk: GMs. They shouldn't sacrifice their personal information just to let their players see the PDF to make characters and familiarize themselves with the game enough to be test players. And few people are...See more

What is the difference between the premium and standard versions of the hardcover book?

According to the kickstarter page "The deluxe edition will be printed on a higher quality of paper". I'm sure the terms premium and deluxe were just switched.

Got my standard version and compared it to the premium versions (from kickstarter backers)- the only difference is the paper weight which makes the premium version about 1/4" thicker. If you want a print version, the premium is the way to go if you intend to use it a lot for an ongoing campaign. The standard version is more than acceptable if you just use it on occasion as a player. Either way, the system is great with interesting mechanics and an engaging storyline.

The current Print on Demand hardback version of the Core Rulebook is printed on 70lb paper (the paper used for the previous deluxe version) and standard ink (we could barely tell the difference between it and the deluxe ink. The result is a better book for the same cost as the previous 50lb paper version.

For me, a big hurdle in tabletop RPGs is how time is managed in the game. An initiative mechanism usually slows the action to a turn-based crawl because the party (and sometimes the GM) forgets who goes next. However, Clockwork Dominion uses a card system that not only makes the turn order and number of actions clear, it also allows for a dynamic sense of time. Players can interrupt each other and the opponent. I played the game for the first time at GenCon 2015 and bought it after the session--awesome indeed.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
