Explorer: Wild Places

Explorer: Wild Places is a set of printable battlemaps compatible with any RPG/Dungeon-Crawl game.

Explorer: Wild Places is a standalone set, comprising 8 10x12  battlemaps.  Each tile depicts a different and unique wilderness area, idea for quick encounters when your party is exploring a hex, or travelling between cities and towns.

Forest Stream: A small stream flows past a clearing in a forest.
Road bend: A cobbled road winds past a large and ancient rock
Mountain Ledge: A scrubby path runs alongside a vertical drop to the ground far below.
Roadside Ruin: A cobbled road runs beside a small stone ruin, with the remains of an intricate floor
Forest Clearing: A small clearing in a patch of woodland.
Cave Entrance: A small cave entrance in an upland area
Overgrown Ruins: A track runs through the remains of a grand building
Farmland Road: A simple road runs alongside fields of crops

Please Note: These maps are not geomorphic, and not intended to match up perfectly with anything. They are intended as standalone battlemaps
Also included is a set of 300dpi full size jpgs, for poster printing or VTT, in both gridded and non-gridded versions. (n.b. gridless version only available as full jpeg)

Although I have given the pack 5 stars, as I have now bought them, I agree with Ryan G. they are just a bit on the small side. I think half as many maps but at a 18x18 or 18x24 would be spot on. I take the publishers point about the Giant Maps though, although I also have these anyway...

The one map for me that really stands out here, is the rural farmland map. With the exception of your pumpkin field, and Dave Grafton's vegetable patch garden maps, I have never seen a high quality farmland map. I would love to see a Widlerness tile pack with this type of stuff on. Obviously they would have to merge with the existing packs.

Hi Paul. Thanks for the feedback. Glad you like the farmland map. We agree - there are surprisingly few maps that depict farmland, and that is something we'll include more of in future maps. We do already cover the 20x20 size - we have lots of maps that size, and there will be future maps of outdoor locations at that size.

I really like the locations in this pack. My only regret is that each map is so small for an outdoor encounter. It works great for an ambush, but any conflict that originates at a distance requires additional maps. I would definitely purchase most of these locations as a 20x20 or 50x50 map.

Hi Ryan. Thanks for your comments. The maps are designed for quick small encounters, but if you're looking for larger scale combat you might want to look at our Giant Maps (such as Lostwere Forest, Gallow Lane Woods, Langstone Ruins) where there's lots of space. You can also look at our Geomorphic wilderness sets where you can build a map of any size. Thanks for the feedback though, and happy gaming!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
