Strange Magic Old School Roleplaying

ADD TO WISHLIST >

An ultralight old school roleplaying game in Pocketmod format, with rules to convert from other old school games. Create an Adventurer, Cleric, Fighter, Magician, Dwarf, Elf or Halfling and run adventures with magic, challenges, and deadly encounters. This is the smallest old school gamebook on the market, and you can print, fold, and take it with you within minutes.

Adapted from the popular Weird West RPG, this pocket-sized fantasy RPG been designed to make reading, creating characters, and starting a game as fast as possible. We've cut out the 'what is an rpg', game fiction, and other 'fluff' to keep the rulebook as lean while still having enough detail to make it fun. When you want to add more detail to a game of Strange Magic, or adapt a published adventure, we’ve included rules to quickly convert between popular old school rules. Being old school compatible means you can also adapt any of the rules in Strange Magic to your favorite game as well.

This purchase includes both a PDF version suitable for reading on your computer, iPad or iPhone and a special 'PocketMod' PDF version for printing. The PocketMod version lets you create your own  4.25" x 2.75" sized game books from a single sheet of paper. Take a copy to read on the go, and print one to give to each of your players.

The abilities of stealth and disarm traps are linked to Magic. I would have to be a Magician to pick locks or to sneak around? What is the point of the Adventurer class?

As written this set of rules is a long way from being usable short of creating a comprehensive set of house rules to deal with rogue skills outside of abilities you get from Magic points.

Kinda odd request: Is it possible you could make a slightly more printer-friendly pdf (this regards mainly the cover with it's mass of black)? I'd love to print out a number of home-made booklets, but the 90% black cover makes this a little bit awkward.
Thanks for this excellent game by the way. I dig it far more than other ultra-lite OSR-type titles popular of late. Cheers!

PUBLISHER
This game is based on the ruleset for Weird West. The other "Strange Magic" product is a set of character classes for B/X D&D. (Strange Magic is the new of my RPG Blog)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
