Physical artifacts are wonderful at the gaming table.  From dice to counters to sheets, we as gamers love to have tools and items to help us play more effectively.  Spells are one of those things that we have to look up constantly and it slows the game down.  So what if you have cards for your spells?  You could go through your deck (spell list) and select the spells you prepare for the day, with handy information on duration, casting time, effects, and material components.

You can buy pre-made cards, but they aren't cheap and you can't customize them with house rules or make your own special cards for abilities or spells.  What about items? What if you need several Healing Potions?  What if more than one person splashed Bard and you need more than one Cure Wounds card?

Make your own.  It's easier than you think.

There is a FREE program called Magic Set Editor that lets you make your own Magic The Gathering cards.  The problem is that you need a template specific to 5th edition DND, with the right fields, icons, and backgrounds...

That's what you are buying here.  This is a Template for Magic Set Editor that lets you make your own 5th Edition DND cards.  Even better, I've already done the work on over 140 spells and items in the CORE rules and am including them as well.  See the sample PDF below for samples of what cards you can make.  You can then print as many as you like.

These templates include:

  • Themes for all PHB classes
  • Various card colors, including black, red, green, yellow, blue, grey, purple, and teal, with gold & silver trim
  • Specific card types for Spells and for Items (general and charged), with custom fields.

Note: These templates work with Magic Set Editor, a free program that allows you to create your own card sets and export or print the card images.  YOU MUST INSTALL MAGIC SET EDITOR to use these.

IMPORTANT COPYRIGHT NOTICE:  You are buying the templates for these files only.  NO card text is being sold.  You are responsible for entering your own card data.

Can't log in to the card pack download page (the one provided in a .txt file). Any chance you can do something about the need to log in?

New to all this so sorry if this is a silly question. Does this template come with backs for the cards?

No. I use colored card sleeves with a MTG card for stiff backing. This lets me print on regular paper!

Unfortunately the Magic Set Editor is a MicroSoft only product. My friend who recommended it did not include this information, and neither did the post here on the DMG. If you use Mac, do not purchase.

Recent purchaser and was wondering, does anyone know a way to further customize the spell cards, in terms of the action and attack type drop downs? I'm making Feat & Class feature cards so it would be great to be able to add in a symbol for each class and maybe a standard avatar for the feats.

All help appreciated, thanks!

Hey Bev. Sorry for the late reply. You can go into the Magic Set Editor 2data5E_Tint_symbols.mse-include folder and see the files there. The easiest way would be to just swap pictures and keep the file names.

If you want to add entirely new ones, you will also need to edit the Game file (in 5E_Tint.mse-game folder) to change the choices, and edit the Style file in each class's folder to edit the file name/locations. It's time consuming but possible.

Hi Daniel, I think I've discovered a bug after updating to the 2.1 version. For the School dropdown on the bottom of the spell cards, Abjuration and Conjuration have been replaced with Bard and Cleric respectively. At first I thought the folder may have become corrupted somehow, but after uninstalling MSE2 (and deleting all leftover files) and then reinstalling both MSE2 and your templates, the issue has persisted. Any idea how I can fix this problem?

Hey David. Could you share me the location of 2.1? The official MSE page only has 2.0 http://magicseteditor.sourceforge.net/download.html

I meant the 2.1 version of your template, not of MSE. Sorry if that wasn't clear. http://imgur.com/hH9bOpd

Oh I see! Well I'll be... you are right. Edit: updated the files and sent emails to customers with patch info. If you don't want to re-install you can just replace the Game file in the data > 5E_Tint.mse-game folder with this one: https://1drv.ms/u/s!AtwIXqdRnFEKeSThWEKw2xtLwG4

Daniel,
I finally purchased your set and I am glad I did. Enjoying it so far. I have one question in regards to magic items that Im hopping you have a solution to. Magic ammunition.... You currently have an item card with "charges" but what Im looking for is a card to make for say a quiver of +1 arrows. Then the player can just tic them off as the use them.
Any help would be great!

Hey Daniel R! Your templates are an essential part of my gaming now, so many thanks to you. I have both your 4e and 5e templates as we were playing 4e but have now migrated to 5e. I haven't found anything better than yours to create my own DnD cards. I would love to see dedicated feature/feat templates as I don't think spell templates are a good fit. Also areas of effect symbols on the spell cards (bottom right) such as cone, cylinder, etc would be great (hint hint). Keep up the good work.

Has the how to video been updated? Has anyone had the problems people talk about on the YouTube video comments? Has this worked for people recently? Leery about this being a dead project with no support. Happy or dissatisfied people out there? Thanks all.

Hello fellow Daniel!

While I haven't developed any add-ons to this project, it's not dead. I still support it fully, so you can support my work with confidence. Some of the common problems people have faced is not seeing the URL readme files in the zip that direct them to additional resources. Please feel free to email me at daniel (at) educatedgamer.net with any questions or problems and I'll get you squared away. If you aren't happy I'll refund your money.

My template is mostly visual (I don't sell the content) so there shouldn't be an issue. If you want to make changes to the pull-down menu options (to translate them) you can as long as you don't resell the template.

Now that 5e has gone OGL, it seems like you may be able to include the files directly. Roll20 seems to have a JSON version of the 5e content which may make it easier.

Could you perhaps make another style for the item set that's just a blank card for full art? I'd like to set it up so that the cardbacks are full size art of the item. I'm working with a full-size art template made for magic but I can't get it to work right as a style for your game type.

If you use the word doc included and print the exported JPGs, you can fit 8 I believe. Not sure how many you get with Magic Set Editor.

Quick question. How many cards are printed per page and are they on standard 8.5x11 or legal 8.5x14?

Thanks
Randy

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
