EDITED AND UPDATED!

A Drive-Thru exclusive in digital format only!  A historical role-playing game inspired and Licensed by DAVID WESELY, creator if the original Braunstein game and founding father of the role-playing hobby!

Role-playing began with the Braunstein games of the late 1960s.  These converted war-games emphasized personal interactions and setting over complex rules and excessive mechanics and, now, these rules let you do the following in a world of adventure right from the pages of the histroy books (which is the best setting of all):

Create, arm, and equip original characters...

Explore real (or alternate) history...

Participate in battles and sieges, and change the course of events...

Or use these rules to play traditional Braunstein games in the style of the original as per the included "Braunstein in the Middle Ages" essay WRITTEN BY DAVID WESELY HIMSELF!

Braunstein! is written in this style, being designed for historical adventure games in the 4th through 15th centuries, but expandable through the early 16th if so desired.  The judge need only choose a historical book(s) on the period they wish to chronicle and use these rules to create characters and resolve unpredictable situations using extremely simple (just 30 pages) mechanics.  The rest is pure interaction...

History is the best, most richly-detailed setting around, but Barons of Braunstein also has simple rules for introducing magic and witchcraft - perhaps the easiest ever!  Historical or otherwise, it's your game now...

A fine small ruleset for standard historical adventures in the Middle Ages. It just has almost nothing to do with the Braunstein of its namesake. There's one page suggesting you could play a Braunstein with these rules, but you're better off goo [...]

A light, yet robust, set of rules that hearkens back to the earliest days of our hobby when Major David Wesely took wargaming to its next logical evolution. Although only designed to run historical or psuedo-historical games out of the gate, the simple [...]

Very rules light and interesting RPG, written for Dark and Middle Age adventuring. The game tries to emulate historical fiction, with very little room for high fantasy tropes, but can easy handle monster heavy sword-and-sorcery campaigns. For [...]

I just received this along with a copy of Pits & Perils and Fear! Fire! Foes! I have been looking for a written copy (or reasonable facsimile) of the Braunstein rules. This was an awesome 24 page discovery. Even though I am less interested in histo [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
