Spooks! Welcome to the Great Beyond

Tabletop Role-playing in the Afterlife

Summary
Congratulations, you're dead! and the afterlife isn't what we thought.  In this fantastical game you play as a spook, otherwise known as the dearly departed, in an Ancient Egyptian inspired hereafter known as the Great Beyond.  Play as a bhoot, doll, ghost, ghoul, skeleton, vampire, wraith or zombie in a predominate Victorian society.  Meet people from history, explore a rich and infinite world under the shinning lights of Necropolis, city of the dead.  Tour infamous locations such as the River of Styx, manifest into the Spirit Realm to haunt the living, unravel the dreams of yesterday and today through the Dream Veil, brave the dangers of the Hellfire Lands or quest for the lost paradises of old such as Elysium, Valhalla or Avalon.  How will you spend your afterlife?

The Story

When Hatshepsut, 5th Pharaoh of the 18th Dynasty of Ancient Egypt, died she inherited the full powers of Osiris.  She reigned in the Great Beyond and protected those who transitioned from their living life into the next.  As her father before her, Hatshepsut was destined to give up the mantle of Osiris when the next Pharaoh passed through the Quietus upon their death so she too may join her ancestors in paradise.  All this changed when her stepson, Thutmose III, out of hatred for her for having delayed his birthright as Pharaoh ordered that Hatshepsut should be erased from history in the Land of the Living.  He desecrated her temples and statues, and had her name stricken from all records.
After Thutmose III died and arrived in the Great Beyond, Hatshepsut was furious.  She refused to give up the powers of Osiris and fed Thutmose's heart to the demon Ammit - forever cursing him to never pass on to paradise.  Since then, Hatshepsut has refused to give up the powers of Osiris, which has started a shadow war between her stepson and many other pharaohs who feel cheated of their death rights.
Now all afterlives have been hidden, causing the souls of the departed to pool into the Great Beyond where the great city of Necropolis has erected.  Hatshepsut has announced the start of the Great Journey, where spooks must work to find their paradise and some where along the way, find themselves.  Adventure awaits those who seek paradise!

I received my book through the kickstarter, so I wasn't able to write a review however I would love to say this this RPG is one of the unique systems and settings that just about anyone can get into. I love the fact that not only is the content fun but it can also be educational because of your tendency to meet historical characters who are now long dead but not inactive! I have found myself more and more paying attention to historical characters from documentaries and reenactments and saying now that would be a cool personality to meet in a game of Spooks! The book is easy to read both for the writing style and the way the layout was done. I would recommend anyone new or veteran to give this RPG a few tries. I would especially encourage RPG families and history buffs who are also roleplayers.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
