Every home needs its heroes…

Your small village seems like a haven to you and your friends, but it is not safe.

Dangerous faeries lurk in the forest just outside of town, wicked men and ferocious monsters are a constant threat, and sometimes dark forces find their way into your neighbors’ hearts. You and your companions are young and untested, but ready to protect what matters.

Come with us beyond the wall...

Lots of times, we want to play a roleplaying game but just don’t have the time for all the prep work involved. No more. Beyond the Wall and Other Adventures is a kit to make a gang of childhood friends and send them off on their first big adventure, just like in the novels we loved growing up. Now we have this simple fantasy roleplaying game that gives a group of players all the tools they need to play an exciting adventure in a single evening, no homework, no fuss.

Anyone with a background in OSR games will already be comfortable with the core rules of Beyond the Wall.

• Inspired by the works of Ursula K. LeGuin, Susan Cooper, and Lloyd Alexander.
• Character Playbooks and Scenario Packs for play in a single evening with no prep.
• Player driven village design for fleshing out the characters’ home.
• Six Character Playbooks, including the Village Hero and the Witch’s Prentice.
• Two Scenario Packs: the Angered Fae and the Hidden Cult.

That's no fun. As publishers, we don't have access to their back-end system, but I recommend reaching out to the wonderful staff at DriveThruRPG/OneBookShelf. They've been a great help to many of our other customers, I'm sure they'll be able to help sort this out. I'm emailing our contact there now on your behalf.

To the Publisher: Any chance of a version of this as a ruleset for Fantasy Grounds?

Hi. We're not very familiar with Fantasy Grounds, but are certainly open to working with them. Please have them get in touch to see what we can arrange!

Aloha,
Fantasy Grounds (https://www.fantasygrounds.com/home/home.php) is the most supported virtual tabletop available, with more official licenses than any other virtual tabletop around. Basically, it allows people scattered all over the world to play RPGs at a virtual table. There are many pay for rule sets available in FG (Fantasy Grounds), that developers make for this platform.

With all the roll for tables, it just seems that this would be a good fit.

I've tried out BtW a few times now ... disclaimer: I've yet to find a D&D-based ruleset that appeals to me. BtW comes close. I love the lifepath creation, I love the feel of the losely defined setting, I love the instant adventure concept ... but I still feel that this game is fighting against its own rules. There's the totally unnecessary high/low roll confusion; there's five (!) saving throws, on of them against breath weapons (in a game where I don't expect the pcs to fight dragons anytime soon) - even though BtW has ability rolls that would serve perfectly well. There's full-on D&D hp bloat, which is totally at odds with the feel the game is going for - I can't remember any prolonged battles in Earthsea, Taran or the Hobbit where hordes of opponents slowly whittle down the hero. I just don't get it. I could think of many rules engines that would have made this a beautiful game overall (OpenQuest would have been a good fit, if you want something old-fashioned). Why does every second game out there have...See more

I'm surprised you still bought a game based on OD&D when you know you've never been interested in that system. Still, your comments are insightful and have convinced me to pass. A BRP based version of this gaming tool would indeed renew my interest.

I just stumbled on this game also, and the first thing I check is the governing system. Alas the same problem. Maybe not so keen anymore. If they could just put it out with a generic system neutral - system.

Any chance of a B&W softcover?

Hi Marek,

Thanks for asking. We don't have any immediate plans for a B&W softcover, as not all of our art works in that format, but we certainly haven't ruled it out.

Our recent efforts are focused on providing supplemental material for Beyond the Wall, which we hope we'll be able to share soon.

Thanks!

To the Publisher: I bought this previously- the POD with PDF combo. Shouldn't the PDF be updated in my library now? Or will it not be because it is a 'different' product?

Michael,
If you bought the previous POD+PDF combo, then the updated PDF should be available to you as part of your library.

It doesn't recognize that I even purchased it. However, I am looking right at the copy on my bookshelf, and I have the PDF from when I bought the package in November of last year. In fact, I see all my other orders from that time in my library and account- just not that. It was there before the change.

To the publisher. I had put this on my wishlist a little while back and finally made up mind to buy the print product, but now I see it is no longer available. Is it coming back, or is there some other channel I need to get a dead-tree version?

Jeremy, we've added color art, a new Scenario Pack, more spells, lots more monsters, tidied up some typos, and promoted an optional rule that everyone loved. As you've already purchased it, I'm sure it'll be worth the download. =)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
