Alternate Classic Hex Map Icons

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Whether you want to use these icons with Worldographer, our older Hexographer, or a general image editor (such as GIMP or Photoshop) or another RPG-related mapping product, these useful icons will enhance the look of your maps.

These icons are almost a one-for-one replacement of the default Hexographer icons. (A few icons are very simple and therefore didn’t need to be replaced… some others were added to Hexographer after these–we may add more and anyone who purchases a set of icons can always get the updated set.) While they are different from the classic mid-80s Gazzetteer maps, we think anyone who loves the style will appreciate these new icons. See the sample map key for the full list.

Like the default Hexographer icons, these are 250×250 pixel transparent PNG images. Therefore, they should look nice scaled to print even as 1″ hexes at 300dpi.

Note: Although you may publish maps with these icons, you may not resell, give away or redistribute the icons except as part of a map (image, pdf, or print.)

To use them in Worldographer, you'll need the Pro version. You can either:

  1. Go to the "Configure" menu and select "Load Configuration" then select the alt-classic.wxx file after this download file is unzipped. This option replaces the default icons with these alternates.
  2. Go to the "Configure" menu and "Add Custom Terrain" and/or "Add Custom Features" to add the icons manually.  You can select many/all of the Feature or Terrain icons at the same time. You can edit the icon settings by going to "Configure" and choosing "Configure Terrain" or "Configure Features" after they have been added.  You can also add them individually in those windows.

To use them in Hexographer, you’ll need the Pro version of Hexographer. Follow these steps:

  1. Unzip the file somewhere on your computer.
  2. Open Hexographer and create or load a new map.
  3. Go to the “Configure Hexes” tab and click the “Import Settings” button near the bottom.
  4. Use the file browser that appears, browse to the place where you unzipped the files and choose for the alt-icons.properties file.
  5. Back in the “Configure Hexes” tab, near the bottom, click “Apply.” Go back to your map and any terrain type which has a multicolored icon should be changed.

Map Icons for our Worldographer software (PNG images, usable with most image/map editors)

Worldographer is version 2 of our prior Hexographer, Cityographer, & Dungeonographer programs. All have free versions downloadable from each program's website.

There are simply too many to show!  See the full range on the category page.

Index of Inkwell Ideas Map Icons:

Each month we've made 4 mini-sets of icons (battlemat, classic world/kingdom, isometric world/kingdom, & settlement) following a theme such as "Greek" or "Elven" or "Temples".

Each year we've bundled up each monthly mini-set of that style:

Battlemat
(dungeon/building interiors)

Classic
World/Kingdom

Isometric
World/Kingdom

Settlement
(mostly top-down buildings)

The monthly sets are also available, but from 2020 onward each month's icons are only availaible as one combined product. (The "Coasts" set from February 2022 has all the battlemat, classic & isometric world/kingdom, and settlement icons in one product/download.) February/March 2023's icon set is a little different--it has 100's of icons in only a "Ring Lord" world/kingdom map style.

Sorry, we have no experience with Hex Kit. These were originally for Hexographer and work with our newer Worldographer as well. They are standard PNG images so they should work with any program that loads PNGs, but again we don't know how Hex Kit handles images. If it imports PNGs they should be fine, although the terrain background colors are not built into the icon, a configuration file loads that extra info. I don't know if Hex Kit has a similar way to do that.

There is no import feature in Worldographer to import these? They are nice icons. I will use them but this is a huge disappointment. I was ready to start mapping with them

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
