43AD - Roleplaying in Roman Britain

Agregar a la ista de deseados >

Ex quocumque facere poteris te sauciabit, nihilo comprehenso.....
Anything you do can get you killed, including nothing.......

43AD is a gritty military-style game with a slice of dark horror running through it. Life is grim and the world of the native Britons is painted in dark and horrific colours. Britain is a place of fear and death, terrors and torments, and the Iron-Age tribes live with these horrors. Celtic priests, the druids, contain them in lakes and pits and forests. When the legions step onto British soil, they step onto a land of ancient horrors of which they (as yet) know nothing. Life, honour and warfare amongst the tribes is explained for players and GMs alike.

Characters are Roman soldiers, fighting for the emperor in a hostile land against the battle-hardened warriors of the tribes. This is the visible enemy, but beyond, should the Game Master wish to go there, lay the dark secrets of Britain, the night terrors, the death-bringing spirits of the wild, the night crawlers, the face eaters, the skinchangers and the rest of the monsters and wild things that infest Britain.

Using fast and gory rules from the tried and test web-game Zenobia, 43AD powers along at a pace. All rolls are made on d6, with the exception of a d100 being used in character creation.

Includes:

  • 9 maps of Roman Britain

Just a small comment. On page 45 you mentioned that there are stables in some forts. The most recent excavations on Hadrian’s wall hint that they were mixed blocks with the riders sleeping in the same rooms as their mounts.

This was often the case with auxiliary troops (the main source of cavalry, missile and 'specialist' non-artillery/engineer troops) on the frontier of empire. In marching forts or military camps the horsemen slept where they could mount up quickly following a 'Stand To!' So as close as possible to their steeds, this was often the stables where they could see to feed, tack etc as well as their own admin.
But of course, this game is in a reality where there is magic and monsters so the histories may not be that of a documentary or of Suetonius, Livy or Tacitus. . . .

I've just bought this and it looks brilliant. Is there any way to get a print copy? If not is there a way to get a copy that I can get printed at Lulu? At the moment it tells me I can't print it because it is encrypted.

Excellent game with a fascinating, inspiring setting, and well researched and presented material. I was curious, however, if there was a mechanic for developing or purchasing a new skill as part of the improvement process? I ask because there are skills that are presented in this book (not counting Warband and Zenobia) that do not seem to come into play either for PCs or NPCs (even with backgrounds and collegia) and I can see PCs wanting an opportunity to access those skills. I've looked for answers on this and come up short. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks and thanks again.

In line with it's father-system, Zenobia, I would rule that Improvement Through Sacrifice (pg114) can also be used to gain a new skill. A skill would cost 3 improvement points, and its acquisition, I would rule must be part of the story, too.

Just started reading through this. Looks like just what I'm after. Is there a version of the PDF with bookmarks? Difficult to use the PDF without them and it's password protected so I'm unable to add my own.

This should be sorted out soon, I have just found an old copy of the Word document (I had previously lost all my copies in a hard-drive corruption).

Great game, but I have a question about armor. The rules seem straight forward in that you add the armor values of the different protective elements together to get the PC's AV. However I noticed that the legionnaires in the NPC section had AV values that don't match up. They have segmented armor and helmets but only have an AV of 3. Shouldn't that be AV 4? The segmented armor is 3 and the helmet is 1 with 3+1 = 4. Is that right or am I missing something?

You could be right there, Randall C. Many of the NPCs come from an independent playtest, and may have not been spotted by me.

Stuff happens. I just wanted to make sure that I was reading the rule correctly.

A great set of rules, with a deep background, written by someone who definitely knows the subject. My only complaint is the layout. The grey triskel that forms the background of each page, makes reading no fun. If possible I would love a version without that background.

At last I might be able to get rid of the watermarked logo! I have stumbled upon a copy of the Word document I had long ago lost in a PC hard-drive failure!

I just picked up the free Zenobia game off of your site which I quite liked the system. Yesterday I actually bought the physical copy of this book off of ebay as well. If this digital version was priced lower I would get this too. I don't think I have ever saw it on sale before but I may be wrong. Just asking if this will ever go on sale. Thanks for your time.

Imagen escaneada
