F1 The Tomb of Rakoss the Undying

Suggested Price $4.99

Rakoss was a great wizard of ages past who served the Emperor of Maere. Tales tell of his prowess as a military strategist, but they also tell of his fall. It is said that although he won campaign after campaign for his emperor, just one failure brought about his doom. Defeated by the King of Cadarn, Rakoss was followed back to his refuge where he, his generals, strategists and personal guard were entombed. Somewhere in the Ganlaw Mountains they remain sealed in by powerful magic.

Who knows what treasure was buried with Rakoss and his retinue, or what horrors remain to test any who might enter the tomb. Certainly only a brave few would dare seek out the final resting place of Rakoss, and even fewer can survive the terrors of The Tomb of Rakoss the Undying!

The Tomb of Rakoss the Undying is a challenging adventure for 5-8 characters of levels 4 to 6.

Great module! Played this a few years ago as a one off in between other adventures. It turned out to be exactly what was needed.

I just completed this module with my group and it was a great success! I love the fact that I had the freedom to be creative with the important parts and still have the structure of a dungeon with descriptions. It's a really great story line and easy to insert into any ongoing campaign. Is there a sequel????

Rhea, we're very glad to hear you had a great experience with Rakoss! Right now there is not a sequel to this adventure, but we do have plans to publish one. R1 The Legacy of Rakoss the Undying is being developed, but we currently don't have any idea when it might be released. Almost certainly it will not be this year. If you would like to continue the storyline for your players come and hang out with us at OSRGaming.org. That is our forum home on the web, and we'd be more than happy to answer any questions you might have about Rakoss as you prepare your own sequel.

Looks good so far. I will post my review shortly, but I noticed a missing "block" of the map on the left side of page 8. I re-downloaded and printed with the same result: a white space blocking a piece of the map on page 8. Any ideas?

I was a little concerned when I heard that the module was going to be rules-neutral. But after reading it, the conversion is extremely simple and can be done on the fly with no investment of prep time on the part of the GM. I'm currently running this adventure as a PbP game using OSRIC and I love it. The module definitely snaps right into the rule mechanics almost seamlessly. The publisher has been very responsive to feedback, which has proven helpful for the PbP game I'm running. I can't say enough good things about the adventure, the author, the publisher, and the entire team that's been involved in the release. Everything about this module is top quality. The layout, line art, and the actual material itself is all very high quality. I'm already looking forward to future releases from Mischief, Inc.

This looks like a very playable adventure, and converting it should be easy(even to 4e). My only question is why are the maps on pages 9 and 10? This breaks up a monster stat block that starts on the bottom of page 8 and ends on the top of page 11. I think it would better serve to place the maps either in the front pages after the title page, or at the end.

Thanks for the comments!

I'm a bit surprised to hear converting to 4e would be easy, but I suppose for the levels and monsters used this could be true.

The maps are in the center of the book for the print version to lie flat when opened to those pages. If we get a lot of complaints about that in the PDF version we may see if we can change it and upload a new version. Future modules should have the maps on the inside covers for both print and PDF. Full inside cover spreads would be either at the front or back of the PDF.

We weren't sure how many people would be using the stat blocks straight from the book, so we didn't give that a super high priority in layout. If we do an updated PDF we'll look into consolidating that stat block as well.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
