Chill 3rd Edition

A Horror Roleplaying Game

Every one of us is weak: mere ants against the stalking giants that have brought us to our knees. Even when we work together, the Unknown is bigger than us, better armed, and better prepared for what’s to come. We have no real advantage, and our greatest victories have been nothing but the monsters toying with us before they descend to feast. Our fight is hopeless.

This is how we’re going to win.

—Hayat Nejem, “How to SAVE the World”

The uneasy feeling that creeps up your spine as you walk down a darkened hallway. The way your footsteps echo oddly on a deserted street at night, as though there was someone walking somewhere behind you.  The shape you see out of the corner of your eye when you’re home alone.

The Unknown lurks in the dark.

We all know it. Luckily, some of us use that knowledge to fight. The odds may be against us, but we can win.

Investigate the Unknown.

Rescue the Innocent.

Kill the Monsters.

Will you stand with us? Remember — SAVE is on your side.

Chill 3rd Edition is an investigative horror roleplaying game about people who stand up against monsters, hunting down supernatural threats and protecting the world from the Unknown. You don’t have to be a superhero to be a member of SAVE; you just have to stand up and join us.

For ages 13 and up.

I'm sometimes surprised when I hear white nationalist anti social justice views from gamers. Then I remember that the community is full of fascists.

Martin C, is there a 3.5 or 4th edition of the base Chill ruleset imminent? Asking for friends (and me).

everyone mad about the inclusion of a diverse cast and giving this new update to a great ttrpg series is absolutely crying over nothing. if you dont agree with the diversity in this game - dont review, dont buy, just find a different game. to sit here and give this game a bad review because its "too sjw" is a waste of not only your time, but others time that have to sift through your cry baby bullshit. get over yourself.

i played the older version of CHILL when i was in high school and i really enjoyed the premise. i wanted to share a cool horror ttrpg with my friends now so i was excited to see this updated version years later. the fact that the writers have taken so much time to be inclusive and diverse while still sticking to the basics of what CHILL is, is great! it opens up this game to everyone and allows minority groups that often are excluded from the rpg scene to feel welcome.

tackling real life issues within a made up setting is a good way to explore issues without...See more

I can't leave a review on the review page. That's bogus. I'll add it here.

Chill 3E. Three stars out of a possible five.

I am awarding it three stars on account of the mechanics. These are excellent and highly playable. The section on monsters is a contender for the best approach ever offered in a game system. So if you are an old school CM looking to start again, the rules will do.
Bring a shovel. They are buried underneath all the stuff I am gigging this system two stars for putting it.
The book starts with a cold open comic strip showing SAVE envoys on a mission. The writing is passable, the art is not. This art is not ready for prime time, not in a sixty five dollar (POD price) Core book. The story centers on a transitioning teenager joining SAVE. A great deal is made of this. A great deal is made of her father (who was in SAVE himself) using the wrong pronoun. This rings hollow as hell. This is a world where monsters eat kids. Literally. A SAVE envoy is going to run...See more

Thanks for the review, especially pointing out the gender identity stuff at the beginning. I wrote a review for a different RPG and its need to champion social issues the author felt important, which really turned me off of the game. My review was deleted three times. I had to contact DTRPG directly, who said I never posted a review. The fourth review stuck, after that. You might want to contact DTRPG directly, as I feel your review is useful and deserves to be put up with the others.

"The story centers on a transitioning teenager joining SAVE. A great deal is made of this. A great deal is made of her father (who was in SAVE himself) using the wrong pronoun."

This is factually incorrect.

Being a fan of Chill, I just purchased this edition and had a bit of an initial read through. The opening comic makes two brief, incidental references to the fact that the main character is transgender, but it is primarily (95%+) just a horror scenario of the sort you'd find in any horror TTRPG. Only someone obsessed with culture war wedge issues would be able to find fault with it on that grounds. More important, in my opinion, is how long it is, and how much it would have jacked up the printing price (and the price of the print book is incredibly steep, in my opinion).

My friends and I are playing this as a change of pace from D&D. It provides an interesting play space for a group who enjoys supernatural/horror. It also leaves enough unknown that allows the GM to do their own world building.

$65 for print and $25 for PDF (regularly) is insultingly steep. Particularly since its $50 on other sites with free 2-day shipping (for members).

Regardless, CHILL is a master of its genre and I've enjoyed it since it hit the shelves backn in '90. Though WoD was more fleshed out, it's system sucked so hard it kept me at bay. CHILL on the other hand has a very...chill (sorry) system that's easy to learn and doesn't come to a screaming game-murdering halt as soon as combat starts.

Yeah, the reason the POD is more expensive is because it costs $40 to print it, so unfortunately it has to be more expensive so I can maintain any kind of profit margins (the ones on other sites are from a print run. so they're much cheaper per unit).

Just pointing out the 1st ed.was around well before 1990. I played the Pacesteeter version in high school in the mid 80s. We pulled an insane number of all-nighters with that game.

It's taken time for me to write this. Because I was not sure where to begin.

I love this game. It gives you everything you really ever need to run a horror campaign. While providing a very simple straightforward system that does the job. And doesn't distract you with any details but what you absolutely need to get the job done.

Monster creation is something few other horror games give you. This game gives it to you straight out of the box. So you truly have everything you need for long term play

So rev up your chainsaw and load up your boomstick! It's time to take the monsters down!

I was intrigued to learn that the first edition group was considering adding vampires and werewolves as potential player types. I am often intrigued by the potential of playing characters that are non-human but not really anymore powerful than a human. I do remember using the Split Personality drawback in the original Chill to create a mechanically functional heroic lycanthrope based on the fact that shapeshifters were as often heroes as villains in myth.

My own urban fantasy setting operates in a setting with the vast majority of supernaturals, including immortal Gods and Demons, are more or less harmless civilians. (Mostly I've run that setting as action/superhero, action/espionage or slice-of-life hijinks...but I have at least one instance of a horror scenario I ran for it (a witch that was tracking down members of various non-human species or psychics in order to sacrifice them and add their innate powers to his own...it started with the killing of a vampyr girl unaware of what she was and stealing...See more

I bought my copy at Gen-Con in Indianapolis and got the hardcover main source book, Chill Master's screen, dice and tokens indalo pouch, and SAVE: The Eternal Society for a really good deal. I've loved CHILL since I first discovered Pacesetter's version, but I didn't care much for the Mayfair edition. The original CHILL had a charm to it and attention to spookiness that made it fun - I felt Mayfair lost the sense of dread that accompanied some of the old Pacesetter materials.

But now an excellent writing team that seems to care about the history of the game has picked up the mantle, and so far it seems promising. I'm really hoping they sell a lot of copies so they can keep producing new supplements. Missing right now is THINGS, which would be a great next book for them to put out, and then VAMPIRES, which I am certain Matthew McFarland would do a superb job updating for Third Edition.

The negative reviews I've read for the most part have been arbitrarily based on that person's view...See more

Thanks very much! I'm actually hard at work writing a new supplement called _Monsters_, kind of in the vein of _Things_ (though more similar in structure to _Horrors of North America_).

Well said the Mayfair version was junk, IMO. I loved the first ed and still have all my books from those long 80s all-nighters. If there was a Friday the 13th or a Full Moon on a weekend a Chill all-nighter became a tradition with my buds back in high school.

The base system (which you can get a look at over at growlingdoorgames.com/chill) is pretty similar to 2nd Ed, just with less math. That's pretty much true across the board, actually; creatures don't track Willpower expenditure, for the most part you don't roll dice for NPCs (creatures tend to be an exception). One of the things I'm planning on doing is writing up a quick conversion guide for 2nd to 3rd ed rules, I just haven't had time.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
