King for a Day, Revised Edition

ADD TO WISHLIST >
Selected Option:

King for a Day is a systemless fantasy sandbox campaign written in the style of Lovecraft, with more creep than gore. Set in a traditional anglo-saxon shire, the campaign is an extensive toolkit of people, places, and strange events all culminating in a horrific and unreal finale.

With nearly 200 NPCs and dozens of unique locations and stories, King for a Day promises to provide many hours of gaming entertainment.

King for a Day is recommended for mature players.

PDF Includes

370-pages of campaign-adventure, including nearly 200 NPCS, 50 storylines, and over a 100 pages of setting content. That's nearly 400 pages of gaming material.

Note: There are two versions of the same PDF. One is vertical and one is horizontal. The contents are exactly the same.

Is there any way to get this guy in hardcover? I'm terrified of a 400 page PoD softcover having less than stellar durability, especially with use at the table.

Jim, I ran your campaign twice, one of those times as an online campaign, both times successfully reaching their respective conclusions. Here's the playlist containing the sessions, and videos with some thoughts on those sessions, as well as a review at the end. The first session used a different adventure module as a campaign starter, but King for a Day begins at the end of that first session, all the way to session 5. I changed and adapted some things for our campaign world, but the fundamental aspects of your module, remained constant throughout the entire journey:

Very disappointed in the print version, it is falling apart already, and I have only looked through it twice. The print version is glued at the spine and poorly at that. Do not buy the print version until this is corrected.

This is incorrect. If you purchased a softcover that is falling apart through this site, contact DTRPG with photos and they will replace it. If you got one directly from me through the kickstarter. That is another matter entirely.

Jim:

Let me clarify. I was referring to the poor quality of the binding of the print version of K4aDR from DriveThruRPG. In the past, I have generally had very good luck with DTRPG print books, however, this was an exception. I will take your advice and reach out to DTRPG.

In closing, there was no issue with the quality of the content or the print, only the quality of binding.

I hope this correction clarifies things a bit.

The print quality has nothing to do with my files. You got a bad glue-up job, because they are struggling to hire people during the pandemic. Anyone can get a bad printed book from any publisher on this site. All of us upload digital files to the same printer. DTRPG will replace the book if you send photos and tell them what happened.

Hi Jim. This is a finely detailed piece of work! Congratulations.

If you have the time, there is a request that I want to make about the index. You may come to learn of it elsewhere.

All the best,
Luis.

Hi Jim, just a heads-up that the blurb about Protocol being GM-less appears in the description. RPGers are generally smart but it might distract a frazzled gamer looking for something low-prep and casual to pick up.

Hi Jim, do you think replacing humanoid tribes with outlaw (as in 'outside the protection and benefit of law', not as in criminal) groups of humans work? I'm working on adapting this to my campaign world which doesn't have non-human sentient creatures.

So long as the populations of those outlaw groups aren't too high, I don't see an issue with it. There is one specific group you'll have to develop a good solution for (without giving anything away on this page), as they have a significant role in the setting. And don't forget, you have 50+ storylines to draw from. You don't have to use them all and thus not every group.

Hi Jim, I have just purchased this, I have two questions:
1- Does this work better with rules light or simple systems?
2- Do you need to purchase the map pack to run it effectively?

Hi Abraham,

1-I ran this campaign four times before I sat down and wrote it up for publishing. I used 2nd edition, PF, and a modified version of dogs in the vineyard. And my advice is this. If you focus on the weirdness and the politics, stick to a rules-light game system. Black Hack comes to mind. If your group is used to getting into fights with orcs/goblins/gnolls/etc — and there are plenty of groups for doing that in this book — then go with your traditional system. Regardless, PF is way too crunchy for this and I would advise against it no matter what.

2-Yeah. If you're going to run it, I highly recommend the map pack. It has lots of great additional info and a map you can give to the players without them knowing anything they shouldn't.

3-Keep me posted on your campaign. I love hearing stories about what people do with it. It's really the best thing I've ever written. Still.

All new art. Sixty more pages. A few new NPCs and some advice on using the storylines. In general, it's cleaned up. Less typos. Less sloppy sentences.

Jim,

I don't mean to nitpick put page 100 under Rabbit-Ear Inn the line "He hired three barmaids — Ashley, Ora, Sunniva" should Ashley be Avery?

I like to but campaigns (especially ones this involved) I run into a local wiki. Doing so catches these kinds of things.

Thanks.

Jim,

Bought this about 2 years ago. I'm finally getting around to reading in order to run it. "Pillars of Power" is mentioned as a story trigger but "Pillars of Power" is not described in Chapter 8: Story lines?

Thanks

nope. that is not correct. i'll need to look into what is missing and why.

this would definitely be about the pillars located throughout the valley, but i need to make it make sense.

not sure how i missed this. i suspect a name changed, but i just might be missing text.

I have read that this setting more-or-less had 2nd Edition D&D in mind. What would actually be the best system to use to run this? My curiosity is piqued...

I have personally used 2nd edition, 3.5, and a modified version of dogs in the vineyard to play this adventure. The last one being the best of all of them because there is so little combat. Anything low-key and that doesn't focus on die rolls for every little thing is my recommendation.

I just downloaded the interior choices LO and LO2 and the setting pdf. Are they all the same (I realize the LO and LO2 are single vs booklet style, but is there any difference from the setting (single page) vs the LO? Hello, Jim.
I 've just downloaded it, it looks really great I m truly amazed!
I m thinking to run it in an no magic - Victorian Era world, in a distant and isolated area. Do you think it's possible to alter so heavily the frame of the adventure?
Thanks!

the entire point of this is for it to be an isolated shire, far away from the rest of the kingdom with difficulty getting back and forth. if there's a train line coming in getting coal and taking it back to birmingham, the tone will be drastically different.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
