OLD SCHOOL FANTASY - NEW SCHOOL PLAY - Welcome to MONSTERS & MAGIC, an "Old School Renaissance" fantasy roleplaying game with a difference! Combining the atmosphere of classic fantasy games with modern RPG mechanics, Monsters & Magic lets you use old school fantasy gaming material with little or no conversion with a new and innovative set of rules. Battle giants, defeat dragons, explore deadly dungeons and mysterious wilderlands — and bring your favourite adventures, supplements, spellbooks, and bestiaries to brilliant new life!

In this book you'll find a full-featured fantasy roleplaying game, including:
  • the Effect Engine, a modular open-license rules system
  • action-packed adventure from 1st to 20th level and beyond
  • rules for castles, kingdoms, guilds, and warships
  • Silvermoon, an introductory adventure for levels 1-4
  • new rules for alignment, hazards, encounters, treasures, epic and mythic gaming, and more!
  • 140 pages, Black & White interior.
Dust off your spell book, polish that suit of +1 plate armour, and unsheath your vorpal blade. Adventure awaits!

Monsters & Magic is a complete fantasy roleplaying game - you need nothing else to play.

Note that while Monsters & Magic is a complete standalone game, featuring rules which can take you to 20th level and beyond, it's also specifically designed to work with your favourite classic fantasy bestiaries and spell books. As such, it contains 1st and 2nd level spells and just over 20 sample monsters - enough to cater for your first 4 or so levels of play. Although the rules can take you much further, you'll want to use your own classic bestiaries or spellbooks for higher level characters, or any of those available for free online!
Other Monsters & Magic products in development include:
- All Under Heaven — Oriental Monsters & Magic.
- The Heroic Companion — Hero Scale Adventures for Monsters & Magic.
- The Horror of Haugling Hall — a Monsters & Magic adventure for levels 1-4.

When I go to download the file, I'm greeted with three versions of the game:
• MJPG2101_MMCore_ebook_2019
• MJPG2102_MMCore_ebook_2019
• MUH042101_Monsters_and_Magic_2017_edition

Which is the latest edition? Clearly, either of the two 2019 files are later than the 2017 edition. But of those two 2019, one is listed with a product code of MJPG2101 and the other MJPG2102. Should I assume that the latter is the latest file? But the game's listing under Details has the file as MJPG2101-PDF. So, which is the latest, i.e., the one that was updated on April 30, 2022?

One last note: the two 2019 PDF's are about 45 MB, while the 2017 PDF is about 13. Yet, the 2017 PDF has cleaner illustrations. The illustrations, especially the line drawings, in the two 2019 PDF's are fuzzier.

I've answered my own question. I put all three PDF's side by side and compared them. There are absolutely no differences between the two 2019 files. Who knows why one is designated MJPG2101 and the other MJPG2102.

However, the 2017 edition shows that it was distributed by Modiphius. The two 2019 PDF's don't show Modiphius as a distributor and are likely the reason for the new editions.

I think the 2017 edition is the one to download. First, it's a much smaller file (13 MB vs 45 MB). Also, the art is cleaner and clearer; the 2019 editions are smudged. Finally, in making the 2019 edition, for some reason, one line on the top of p. 23, "Other Advancements," moved back to the bottom of p. 22. The formatting through pp. 23–24 is now affected and slightly off. It's not the end of the world; you'll figure out what's going on, but the 2017 edition retains the original formatting.

Question regarding the magic system. So I understand that if you’re casting an offensive spell, say magic missile, you add the spell’s damage dice to the spellcasting roll and then anything above the target’s resistance are effect points used to deal damage, create effects etc.

So far so good. But what about an AOE damage spell like Fireball that deals 1d6 damage per level? Am I to understand that a 10th level wizard casting a 10d6 fireball spell would roll 3d6 + INT modifier + trait bonus (which will likely result in adding their wizard level) + 10d6 fireball damage? If that’s the case, wouldn’t that be a bit too OP?

Let’s suppose that said 10th level wizard is fighting a Hill Giant and his pack of ogre henchmen and decides to toast ‘em all with a fireball spell. Our wizard rolls 3d6 and gets 11, adds in his INT modifier (+6), his applicable traits which lets him add in another +10, and rolls 28 on the 10d6 fireball damage for a total of 55. The Hill Giant is the toughest...See more

After reading the 3 reviews, all very well written, the question as I see it, is ...is this book worth 27 bucks or actually 36 when I consider shipping, for black and white softcover?

Well, it's not asking too much really.
But is it sufficiently unique when measured against the competition.
THAT'S the real question to ask eh.

It's competing with titles such as Dungeon Questing 24 bucks plus shipping in hardcover.
Also Heroes and Monsters 15 bucks plus shipping in softcover.
Both have pdf prices under 3 bucks.

Plus there are other options more absolutely close to pre 1e D&D as well as some that go the d6 route or d100 style. And all very complete 1 book designs. Not to mention half the price. Barebones Fantasy doesn't break 30 bucks and is hardcover. White box Fantastic Medieval Adventure doesn't break 20 bucks in softcover.

OSRIC is the ultimate old school D&D softcover and clocks in at 400 pages of nothing left out at all. And...See more

Is the price right? It says the tittle's been marked down by 25%, but it doesn't seem to be the case (by my calculations the price should now be about 8 bucks).
Thanks

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
